Shopify vs Magento. Part 1

There was a time, not that long ago, where I would regularly declare there was no competition between Shopify and Magento. Boy have things changed, and boy was I wrong.

Shopify have experienced some phenomenal growth over the last few years. Going public certainly helped, as did the thousands and thousands of monthly paying and happy customers. With this growth, they have been able to move from strength to strength, quickly catching up to Magento in terms of global interest and usage. Here's a graph that shows just that (the red line is Shopify, in case that wasn't clear).

Pocket Square have always been platform agnostic; whichever platform worked best for the client would be the one we recommended and rolled with. We've built sites on Magento, Shopify, Shopify Plus, Wordpress and even a couple on BigCommerce.

Over the last two years, the amount of fashion and lifestyle brands that approach us who we end up recommending Shopify has been staggering. But why? Magento has always had a strong presence in this space. What is different about Shopify that has started this shift?

Over the next couple of weeks (maybe even months if I keep thinking of reasons) I'm going to write some of the key reasons why Shopify has come out on top for our clients.

Here's a couple of things I'll write about over the coming weeks:

  1. Hosting & Infrastructure

  2. Cost of Development/Maintenance

  3. Ease of Use

  4. Upgradability
